Essex’s Jo O’Meara On S Club 7, Wing Walking And K-9 Angels

Contents

Essex-based Jo O’Meara hits the heights with S Club 7, but she tells Absolutely that she’s never been happier, whether that’s her solo career or wing walking in aid of charity

How did the wing walk in aid of K-9 Angels go back in August?

The wing walk went as well is it could I guess! It was possibly the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done, but I’m so proud I have done it. It was worth it to try and help raise money and awareness for a charity close to my heart.

Why were you keen to get involved with the K-9 Angels Animal Rescue Charity?

As soon I was asked if I wanted to become the third Angel, I literally jumped at the chance! Animals have always been a big part of my life and rescuing/helping in any way I can is something that is very important to me. So, I am honoured to be involved. (https://www.k-9angels.org)

Do you have dogs yourself?

I do! I have two dogs and a cat. My little Wilson was more of a re-home, but Wilma is a full-on rescue, she came from a very traumatic past, so watching her bloom into the beautiful girl she is, is just the most amazing feeling! I think anyone who rescues will know how it feels to save a dog’s life and make them happy again. It’s very special! My cat Peggy is also a rescue; I really believe in adopt-don’t-shop.

You are also releasing a charity single in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital. Why are you keen on supporting GOSH?

Great Ormand Street is such a wonderful hospital. The care, love and work that everybody does there is just incredible, we are very lucky to have such a wonderful hospital in our city. I think it is very important to support the work they do and always raise funds to help fund new treatments and cures for our children.

Why Thriller as the song?

Thriller is an all-time classic song and this year the song turns 40. It seems the perfect song for Halloween 2022!

What memories do you have of first hearing it – and seeing the video?

I have always been a huge fan of MJ! The first time I heard this song and saw the video as a very young girl, I just remember how unbelievable I thought it was. The dance, the costume, the story – it was all just pure perfection.

How did you go about getting the charity single’s participants involved?

I was asked to be involved pretty early on. I was so excited to get involved with the project as I’m a huge fan of the song. Meeting everyone on the day at Metropolis was such an amazing day.

How was the whole experience of putting it together?

We recorded the song and video all in the one day, which was amazing. I think I wrapped up the lead vocal in a couple of hours in the morning and then the video was shot at the same time. We kind of went off, did some filming and there would be the other celebs recording etc, so it was a pretty full-on but very funny day.

What’s the latest with your own solo career?

The solo stuff is still very active. I am looking forward to getting back to the studio soon to begin writing and recording the follow up to With Love. I want to try and find some new sounds and explore myself as a solo artist some more. There is still so much I want to do and so much I want to learn. I believe you never stop learning.

How do you see your singing developing?

I feel I am developing in the right direction as a singer. I’m finding my place and enjoying what I do more now than ever. My new management, Saga Entertainment, have been just incredible at steering me in the right direction so I feel very lucky.

Do you look back on the height of S Club 7’s fame with fondness?

I do! I’m very proud to have been a part of something as special as S Club 7. We had some amazing times and shared some life-changing experiences together. It will always be a part of who I am.

What would you say you learned from that period?

I learned so much from being in the band. From work ethic, to giving myself a break. I don’t get so hung up on things as I used too but I do believe if you want something, you have to work hard to get there.

Are you happy where you are right now?

I have said this in previous interviews … I am the most happy I have ever been in my life and I really mean that. It’s a nice feeling to feel! I feel completely satisfied with the way things are going and the direction I’m taking and very lucky to have such amazing people around me. Life is good.

I believe you are based in Essex – how long have you been here for now and what do you love about it?

I have been in Essex my whole life; this is where I am from and I love where I come from. I think Essex used to get a bit of stick back in the day, but it really is a beautiful place to live. It’s home.

We always ask about 3 favourite places in Essex, which could be landmarks, restaurants, shops, outdoor spots etc etc – so where would you choose?

Epping Forest is defo one place I love; there’s nothing better than jumping in the car with the dogs and going for beautiful long walks. It’s stunning!

I also love Sheesh Restaurant. The food is out of this world so that’s defo on the list. Lastly, I would have to say good old Collier Row. It’s been my home for 43 years and I love everything about it. There’s no place like home.

What does 2023 hold in store for you?

2023 is going to be amazing! There are lots of things in store next year and it’s very exciting. So, keep your eyes peeled.
