Opening at Fitzrovia Gallery, I, Submerged is the first London solo exhibition from artist Cathy Hayes, an expressive mixed-media artist known for her vibrant use of colour. Transitioning from architecture to art, Hayes’s unorthodox artistic journey is deeply intertwined with her unique perspective on the world. Her architectural training has influenced her artwork’s structure and composition, leading her to embrace a flatter vision of space reminiscent of Matisse’s techniques. Formal training and residencies at prestigious institutions such as the Slade School of Fine Art have been instrumental in expanding her artistic approach.
The central theme in Cathy’s latest body of work is finding inner peace. Her work explores moments of awe and connection in the ocean, where she submerges herself to dissolve the constructed self. This solo show promises an evolution in her palette, inspired by Chinese watercolour techniques and her connection to the Bahamas, particularly the ocean and the marine life that thrive there.
I, Submerged, Fitzrovia Gallery W1, from 16 November
