CHANGING LIVES

A revolution in fitness is underway, thanks to Electro Muscular Stimulation. Absolutely finds out more from Angelique Frank, founder of Body20 UK.

Can you transform your body with only 20 minutes per week?
Yes, you can! Body20 has opened its first state-of-the-art Electro Muscular Stimulation (EMS) fitness and personal training boutique studio in Fitzrovia. As an international pioneer in offering this cutting-edge technology, Body20 Fitzrovia seeks to revolutionise the way Londoners achieve their fitness goals.

What inspired you to bring Body20 to the UK?

I have owned a Body20 Studio in South Africa for eight years which is currently running at capacity, and I find it very fulfilling to literally transform the lives of my clients. While visiting family in London last year, I noticed an apparent lack of EMS fitness centers, as well as how time-poor and rushed most Londoners are. I want to bring Body20 to the UK, at a time when the healthcare system is failing to cater to some chronic conditions, because exercise in itself is an effective intervention which improves people’s health. Finding the time and right training regimen are common barriers to exercise which Body20 mitigates against.

Body20 is a leading international fitness studio chain utilising EMS technology to deliver efficient and effective workouts in a premium boutique-gym environment. The premium brand was founded in South Africa 10 years ago and is now an international leader in EMS training. We already have hundreds of studios open in the United States, over 60 in Southern Africa, as well as many in Belgium and New Zealand too.

What makes this kind of training different and how does EMS work?

Body20 utilises EMS to provide a full-body workout in just 20 minutes, equivalent to the results of a traditional four or five-hour gym session. This innovative approach is perfect for those with busy schedules who still want to prioritise their health and fitness.

EMS works by sending low-frequency electrical impulses to contract your muscles during exercise, increasing workout intensity and activating 98% of your body’s muscles. This technology, used for decades in rehabilitation and performance enhancement of professional athletes, is now available for full-body training, ensuring safe and powerful workouts in a fraction of the time.

What makes your offering unique in the UK market?

We offer an individualized personal training regimen to every client who walks into our studio. This comes with a set number of EMS sessions per week using dry wireless technology, nutrition analysis, and weekly body composition scans. In the studio, we offer a protein shake post-workout to aid recovery and have towels, showers, toiletries, and hair dryers to get the client back to normal life as soon as possible.

What happens in a typical class?

Body20’s classes are designed to be low-impact and easy on the joints, making them accessible to anyone. Clients wear a wireless, electrode-enabled bodysuit that connects to the EMS device, using the latest dry patented technology, which eliminates the need for water and having to wear a wet, smelly suit. Wireless also increases the variety of workouts that you can do, enabling a high degree of customization.

What results can one expect after training with Body20?

With a healthy lifestyle and regular EMS classes, results can be felt after just four weeks and visibly noticeable after six to 12 weeks. Scientific studies have shown a 4% reduction in body fat and a 30% increase in strength over a six-week period. Additionally, 89% of participants reported feeling stronger and fitter. In addition to fat loss and increased strength, benefits of EMS training include cellulite reduction, relief from back pain, improved posture, correction of muscular imbalances, increased endurance, and strengthening of core and abdominal muscles.

What level of fitness does Body20 cater to?

EMS is suitable for all fitness levels and body types, accommodating anyone over the age of 16. Body20 aims to make professional fitness accessible to everyone.

Why does one need to commit to a package?

Body20 has an individualized approach to health and fitness, so most of our clientele become like family and are usually members for life. Those just starting their transformation journey may benefit from 2-3 classes per week, while those already in fairly good shape may find 1 class per week sufficient. Your Body20 coach will provide tailored recommendations based on your body composition scan. Once our clients have reached their own unique goals, most incorporate 1 EMS class per week as an ongoing part of their lifestyle to maintain their transformation results.

THE LOWDOWN

Electro Muscular Stimulation 101

How does EMS work?

EMS (Electro Muscular Stimulation) sends low-frequency electrical impulses to contract your muscles while you exercise, increasing the intensity of your workout which activates 98% of your body’s muscles.

Is EMS safe?

Yes, EMS is completely safe. Scientifically researched and used for decades, EMS was used for both rehabilitation and localized performance enhancements. Your classes are fully supervised by an experienced and certified EMS Personal Trainer who will check that the intensity levels are safe for your individual training regimen. The impulses don’t go deeper than your skeletal muscles so they can’t reach cardiac muscle or internal organs.

Who can’t do EMS training?

Unfortunately, people who are pregnant, have a pacemaker, have a neurological disorder, cancer, or acute injury/fever cannot do EMS.

How soon can I see the results?

Combined with a healthy lifestyle and depending on how many EMS classes you take per week, results can be felt after just 4 weeks and be visibly noticeable after only 6-12 weeks. Over a 6-week period, scientific studies have shown that a 4% reduction in body fat and a 30% increase in strength is possible. 89% of the participants felt stronger and fitter.

How many classes should I do per week?

If you are not doing any other form of exercise and are not close to reaching your fitness goal, we recommend 2-3 EMS classes per week. If you are in fairly good shape and regularly do another form of exercise, we recommend 1 EMS class per week.

What are the benefits of Body20’s EMS?

  • Wireless and patented dry EMS kit (as opposed to wet and smelly suits!)
  • Strengthen and build lean muscle
  • Increase fitness, endurance, and energy levels
  • Reduce back pain (in as little as three classes)
  • Fat loss
  • Cellulite reduction
  • Correct muscular imbalances
  • Speed up post-injury and post-surgery recovery
  • Skin tightening

Am I too old or too young to enjoy Body20’s EMS classes?

Body20 offers training to anyone 16 and above. Our EMS classes are designed to accommodate all fitness levels, body sizes, age spans, and wellness goals.

What can I expect in my 1st EMS Class?

Your personal trainer will assist you to put the Dry EMS Suit on over the training undergarment we will provide for your trial class. During the workout, you will feel a 4-second contraction of your muscles followed by a 4-second release. The electric impulse will start off very weak and your trainer will slowly start to increase the strength level during the 20-minute class according to your tolerance. The actual workout will involve a series of simple exercises such as lunges, squats, bicep curls, abdominal crunches etc. which your personal trainer will demonstrate and check for safety.

What should you bring?

Just yourself! We have everything else that you’ll need including bottled water, sweat towels, showers, towels, toiletries, and hair dryers. Opening hours are 7 am – 9 pm on weekdays and 9 am – 3 pm on weekends.
