Absolutely Sussex chats to Brighton-based Paula Kirkwood about her luxurious leather creations
How long have you worked in fashion and how would you say the industry has evolved in that time?
I studied fashion and textiles at Brighton University and from there worked in various parts of the fashion retail and design world – so 22 years from uni.
How do you look back on your time working with Traid?
I loved working at Traid, from sourcing stock for the shop to creating collection pieces for the in-house studio. I learnt a lot about the textile industry and about people’s understanding of the fashion industry.
What eventually inspired you to launch your own business?
I was made redundant from Traid shortly after having my daughter and needed to be able to work from home whilst she was so young. After working in clothing production I decided to change direction and concentrate on accessories instead, namely leather goods in particular.
How would you sum up what Paula Kirkwood offers?
My style I would say is functional with a minimalist aesthetic. The idea is to have a piece of leatherwork that works for you whilst being able to appreciate every part of the beautiful leather that is being used.
What do you feel makes you different?
Within my work I aim to be really aware of where my materials come from, from my leather to my packaging. I try to be as frugal and conscious of every scrap, so as not to leave such a big footprint on the world with my work.
What inspires new designs?
Inspiration for me can come in many forms, like textures, architecture, art… I tend to fill sketch books with shapes, textures, lines, and different leathers.
Can you explain how a piece is created?
I start by going through my sketchbook ideas, then apply the functionality, what and who is this design for? I want to create something that is useful and beautiful and more importantly that my customer would like. Then I create a paper pattern followed by a sample (first prototype). Wear it, see how it functions, see if anything needs to be altered, before creating the final design.
We are approaching the AW22 season – what can we expect from you?
This winter I’ll be focusing on four new bag styles and a couple of other colour ways. Also I will be bringing in some smaller leather goods, such as card cases, wallets, airpod cases and some tech sleeves for iPads and laptops. Some great Christmas gifts ideas!
How long have you been based in Brighton and what do you love about it?
I’ve lived in Brighton for 30 years now. I am originally from the Isle Of Wight, then I moved to Worthing for college then to Brighton for Uni. I fell in love with the laid-back, bonkers, creative vibe by the sea and didn’t want to leave. Just like many others!
Is it a great place to be for any lover of fashion?
Yes, you have access to the high street brands, but more importantly you have so many independent boutiques and vintage clothing stores and pop ups. Not to mention all the makers’ fairs and markets that go on throughout the year. You’ll always find new brands and labels that you won’t find anywhere else.
What’s next for you?
Apart from the new collection coming soon, I’ll be stocking some new and exciting stockists in the next couple of months, so keep your eyes peeled.
