As the holiday season approaches, the Corn Exchange Newbury is gearing up for a truly enchanting pantomime. This year’s production of “Dick Whittington” promises to be a spellbinding affair, bringing together stars from the wizarding world of Harry Potter and the fantastical realm of The Hobbit.
A Star-Studded Cast Takes the Stage
Leading the talented ensemble is Chris Rankin, best known for his portrayal of Percy Weasley in the Harry Potter film series. Joining him are Kai Harris (West End Does Christmas 2023) as the titular Dick Whittington and Jade Johnson (The Book of Mormon, Prince of Wales Theatre) as Cosmo the cat.
The creative minds behind this magical production are none other than Plested Brown and Wilsher, comprising Amanda Wilsher, Clare Plested, and Adam Brown. Adam, a Newbury local, is familiar to audiences worldwide as Ori from The Hobbit trilogy and recently shared the stage with Sir Ian McKellen in Mother Goose at Theatre Royal, Brighton.
From Hogwarts to Newbury: Chris Rankin’s Pantomime Journey
In an exclusive interview, Chris Rankin shared his excitement about joining the Newbury pantomime. Reflecting on his earliest pantomime memories, Chris credits these experiences for igniting his passion for theatre. “It’s a collaboration between the performers and the audience – and when it’s done right, it’s electric!” he enthused.
Chris’s journey from the Harry Potter films to the stage has been an interesting one. While he’s worked behind the scenes in television production, his heart belongs to live performance. “I’m much more comfortable on a stage with a live audience than I am in front of a camera,” he admitted.
As for his role in “Dick Whittington,” Chris teased, “I think Alderman Fitzwarren is a great part with potential for lots of buffoonery, so we shall see.”
Adam Brown: From The Hobbit to Directing Delight
Adam Brown, transitioning from his role as Ori in The Hobbit to directing this year’s pantomime, shared his unique perspective on the production. “We’ve given the story a fresh spin to make it resonate with a younger, new-to-theatre audience, while still packing in all the classic jokes, slapstick, and routines that make panto what it is,” he explained.
Comparing his experiences in blockbuster films to intimate theatre productions, Adam noted, “Being the boss is definitely better for a control freak like me! I love both experiences, but let’s be honest: having that kind of creative control in a smaller setting is way more rewarding.”
A Magical Mash-up Not To Be Missed
