Jason Donovan is making a much-anticipated return to one of his most famous roles: playing Frank-N-Furter in Richard O’Brien’s anarchic musical, The Rocky Horror Show. Absolutely sits down with him to discuss his stage return, personal growth, and the enduring appeal of fishnet stockings.
The Return to Rocky Horror
When asked why he’s returning to the role, Jason enthusiastically responds, “In a nutshell, I’m a fan. I love the show; I love the music; I love the character.” He recalls including ‘Sweet Transvestite’ from Rocky in his own show five years ago, which “went down a storm.”
Eager to be part of the 50th anniversary production, Jason reached out to producer Howard Panter. His initiative paid off, leading to performances in Sydney and Melbourne, and now an extensive UK tour, including a stop in Essex this month.
The Rocky Horror Show, a musical with music, lyrics, and book by Richard O’Brien, is a humorous tribute to B-movies of the science fiction and horror genres from the 1930s to the early 1960s. Since its premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in 1973, it has been performed in 20 different languages and seen by an estimated 30 million people globally.
Personal Growth and Family Life
Jason reflects on how his life has changed since he first played Frank-N-Furter over 25 years ago. He credits the show for introducing him to his wife, Angela Malloch, who was the stage manager during a late 90s touring production. Their relationship faced challenges, but Angela’s ultimatum led to a significant turning point in Jason’s life. The couple married in 2008 and now have three children: Jemma (24), Zac (23), and Molly (13).
A Diverse Career in Entertainment
Jason’s career has evolved from his small-screen fame as Scott in Neighbours to chart-topping pop stardom and now as a stalwart of musical and straight theatre. His notable roles include Joseph in Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd, among others.
Embracing Frank-N-Furter Again
At 56, Jason feels comfortable returning to the role of Frank-N-Furter. He describes the character as embracing both his masculine and feminine sides, combining “strength and vulnerability as well as danger and denial.” On wearing the iconic costume, Jason says, “When I put on those high heels, I become that rock ‘n’ roll star. It makes me feel powerful, tall, in charge.”
Maintaining Health and Balance
Jason acknowledges the physical demands of the role and touring. He spends more time in physio, maintains a sensible eating regime, and works hard on vocal training. He emphasizes the importance of work-life balance, stating, “I like to think I work to live, not the other way around.”
After The Rocky Horror Show tour, Jason plans to embark on his “Doin’ Fine 25” tour, featuring 35 concerts across the UK and Ireland. This greatest hits show will celebrate his 35 years in the entertainment industry.
