Meet the New Deputy Heads Academic at Harrogate Ladies’ College

After a combined 14 years of service at Harrogate Ladies’ College, Paul Dwyer and Siobhan Scully have taken on the roles of Deputy Heads Academic. Absolutely meets them both to discuss their journey and vision for the school.

Paul Dwyer: Fostering Academic Excellence

Early Career and International Experience

Paul Dwyer’s teaching career began unexpectedly in Bishop’s Stortford, where he started as an unqualified teacher and trained on the job. After seven years, he moved to Hong Kong, where he spent eight years as Head of Maths and later Assistant Head at an international school.

Joining Harrogate Ladies’ College

Attracted by the school’s small size and empowering ethos, Paul joined Harrogate Ladies’ College in 2018 as Head of Mathematics. In 2020, he became Joint Head of Sixth Form while continuing his role as Head of Maths.

New Role as Deputy Head Academic

As Deputy Head Academic with a focus on Pupil Progress, Paul’s main responsibility is ensuring all students reach their academic potential. This involves:

  • Working closely with Heads of Department and teaching staff
  • Overseeing assessment and progress monitoring
  • Reporting to parents and implementing proactive interventions
  • Collaborating with the HR manager on staffing and recruitment

Vision for the Future

Paul is excited to align the school’s academic provision with its excellent pastoral care, ensuring that all students’ academic potential is fully realized.

Siobhan Scully: Nurturing a Community of Learners

Journey to Harrogate Ladies’ College

Siobhan’s teaching career began in Cheshire, followed by a stint in Yorkshire where she honed her skills in teaching economics. She joined Harrogate Ladies’ College as Director of Business School with responsibility for Digital Strategy.

Contributions to the College

Siobhan has managed remote learning during COVID and developed the “Be Inspired” programme, which prepares students for the future workplace.

New Role and Responsibilities

As Deputy Head Academic, Siobhan will:

  • Work with pupils and staff to maximize learning across all age groups (2-18)
  • Share expertise to ensure progress for students of all abilities
  • Continue developing the “Be Inspired” careers programme and digital strategy

Approach to Learning

Siobhan emphasizes the importance of repetition and creating a safe environment where learners feel comfortable sharing their knowledge and applying it to different scenarios.

Mark's career in journalism started in 2001 when he landed a role on a small lifestyle magazine in Angel, North London. Soon enough, the magazine was purchased by a larger organisation and Mark found himself promoted to editor at the tender age of 23.
