Colour-phobes look away now. Red is officially the colour of the season – here’s 12 reasons to love this stylish shade

The Return of Red
Crimson, berry, scarlet and mahogany; nothing says autumn like a flash of red. A host of brands – everyone from Fendi and Givenchy to Jil Sander and Oscar de la Renta – embraced AW17’s traffic-stopping hue and, incidentally, all choose head-to-toe colour-blocking as their styling method of choice. The key was to combine textures: patent with wool, chiffon with velvet, to ensure aesthetic interest.
Not to be confined to regal, floor-grazing gowns, this democratic colour trend also worked its magic on chunky oversized knitwear, tracksuits and sharply tailored suits. As the mercury drops, the fashion elite have been pairing chunky red polo necks with midi dresses and knee-high boots. Red coats, meanwhile, are another new season look du jour. Coming in a range of guises, including puffa jackets and classic dusters, they’re the easiest way to add colour to your AW wardrobe. We love Bimba Y Lola’s red check coat, which will instantly jazz up a white shirt and jeans.
The Lady in Red comes in many guises this season and she is certainly not to be messed with…
