Nobody could have anticipated the negative impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on all aspects of life. Recent studies conducted by Bupa Global, as part of its Executive Wellbeing Index, has found that 70% of high net worth individuals have suffered with symptoms of mental ill health since the start of the pandemic.

Having spent so much time indoors without the usual social events and happenings we usually have to look forward to, productivity levels have dwindled and many of us have been left feeling particularly ‘burnt out’.

As offices across the UK prepare for a phased reopening, it is important that we take the time to look after our mental health. Leaders and bosses face a double challenge, as they must look after their own mental health, and they also have a duty of care to look after their employees.

Unfortunately mental health issues, especially for men, can still be stigmatised. Stigmas and misconceptions surrounding mental health can delay people from seeking vital treatment, so it is important to tackle these head on. Managers and business leaders have a duty to break down the stigmas associated with mental health issues such as anxiety and stress, to ensure everyone can thrive in a workplace environment. Dr Luke James, Medical Director at Bupa Global, says ‘The first step is being open and honest, accepting our challenges, rather than brushing them under the carpet. Just because you’re successful, it doesn’t mean everything is OK, and because there is no one size fits all approach to dealing with mental ill health, expert support is essential’.

It’s often said that a happy workforce is a more productive workforce. Keeping employees happy has an effect on retention, creativity and productivity levels. Employees want to feel valued and understood, so it’s important to discuss mental health openly and honestly.

Dr James states that the key is viewing mental health for what it is – a problem with someone’s health. Mental health should always be taken as seriously as issues with our physical health. ‘We find it normal, or at least easier, to talk about our physical illnesses than we do about how life, stress and mental ill health affects our brain. But the truth is that speaking up about mental health in the workplace is the only way to break this stigma’.
