Things to Do Near Essex This Month
Ha!milton
Dates: 12 January 2025
Venue: Cliffs Pavilion
This is not a musical. Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it. He has more important things to discuss. Like giraffes… and there’s a bit about tomatoes. You might know him from Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo or Radio 4. Or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party, fought a hard campaign, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff.
Halla Groves-Raines
Dates: Until 20 April
Venue: Firstsite
Explore modern Essex and Suffolk through the faces and stories of its residents in this intimate portrait exhibition by artist Halla Groves-Raines. Featuring over ten existing and new paintings, embark on a unique journey through our region, exploring modern perspectives of local women and family connections in Essex-based artist Halla Groves-Raines’ first solo exhibition in a public gallery.
The Little Mermaid
Dates: 31 January-9 February
Venue: Mercury Theatre
Let Colchester Operatic Society take you on an ‘under the sea’ musical adventure following the timeless tale of Ariel, a spirited young mermaid, who longs to be part of the human world. But transforming into a human will come at a price… Watch her adventure unfold as she makes a deal with evil sea witch Ursula to become human for three days, so she can capture the heart of Prince Eric.

Venue: Beecroft Art Gallery
Bringing together garments from household names including Lily Savage, Danny La Rue and beloved RuPaul’s Drag Race UK contestants such as Tia Kofi and River Medway, this exhibition will reflect the past and present importance of drag with a particular focus on drag in Southend, South Essex and the East of England. Featuring costume, film, ephemera and photography, The Drag Show offers a behind-the-scenes insight into the highly skilled and creative work involved in the preparation and delivery of drag.
Wolf Man
Dates: From 17 January
Venue: Various cinemas
Blumhouse have become known for revitalising classics and here’s another one. Blake and his family are attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside a farmhouse as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable that soon jeopardizes his wife and daughter.

Venue: Saffron Walden Museum
From telescopes to tortoises, meteorites to the moon landing, Saffron Walden Museum’s We Choose to Go to the Moon will showcase the fascinating science and culture of the final frontier.
