Spring brings a burst of creativity to the Moors. A brand-new three-week Arts Festival will run from April 7th to 27th, coinciding with the Easter holidays. Events will be scattered across the region, from Sutton Bank and Danby Lodge National Park Centres to various venues throughout the North York Moors.

The artistic flair continues with the return of the Mini Arts Festival on May 31st. Presented by the community interest group 3-Minute Arts at Glaisdale, this event will feature a delightful mix of drama, storytelling, music, and art. Adding to the cultural tapestry, 2025 will also see the debut of a kite festival, promising colorful skies and family fun.

These events are part of a broader initiative by the new North York Moors Arts and Culture Partnership, involving over 20 creative organizations. Their goal? To enrich the local cultural scene and showcase how the arts can enhance wellbeing amidst the park’s stunning natural beauty.

2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the modern railway, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is pulling out all the stops to celebrate. Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy the new 200 Trail and participate in 200 railway-themed activities. From scenic walking routes that start right from the train to geocaching adventures and exploration of filming locations, there’s no shortage of railway-inspired fun.

May 2025 will see one of NYMR’s Pullman Dining Trains offering a special menu to commemorate two centuries of rail travel. For the ultimate railway enthusiast experience, you can even stay overnight in converted heritage coaches or station houses.

Don’t miss out on a journey along the Esk Valley Railway, running from Middlesbrough to Whitby. This picturesque route takes you through the heart of the North York Moors, with stops at charming villages like Danby, Egton, and Glaisdale.

Unveiling Hidden Gems

In 2025, the National Park is shining a spotlight on its lesser-known treasures. Take Cropton village, for instance, home to the fascinating Cawthorn Roman Camps. New interpretation panels and an accessible viewing platform will offer visitors insight into this ancient military complex.

The market town of Helmsley is another gem often overlooked by those rushing to the coast. With its burgeoning food scene, historic castle, and the nearby Rievaulx Abbey, it’s a perfect spot for a day trip or short break. The newly opened St Aelred’s Trail provides a 41-mile circular route for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders to explore the area.

Embracing Sustainable Travel

The Mountain Goat minibus tours offer guided excursions from York to Whitby, while the expanding cycling infrastructure makes two-wheeled exploration easier than ever. The Coastliner bus service once voted the most scenic bus route in Britain, provides an affordable way to traverse the heart of the Moors.

With so much on offer, 2025 is shaping up to be an unforgettable year in the North York Moors. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, art enthusiast, or railway fanatic, there’s never been a better time to plan your visit to this enchanting National Park.
