Embrace the country charm of the western shirt: this season’s most laid-back fashion trend

Words Joy Montgomery

For Coach’s resort 2017 collection Stuart Vevers embraced the time-worn appeal of vintage Americana. His western shirts were the star of the show. Retro rocket motifs were juxtaposed against the fluoro green of the fabric. The looks were then kicked into 2017 with a leather mini and pointed boots. Our hearts were well and truly won.

Characterised by a stylised yolk and embellishment, western shirts became iconic when worn by movie cowboys in the 1950s. They’ve come a long way from their ranch roots, yet their decorative appeal has been well and truly embraced by the fashion industry.

Designers have made western shirts a must-have item for SS17. Offering a fashion-forward spin on the style by experimenting with fabrics and embellishments. The majority of retailers have opted for shirts is classic blue hues, which will slip into your wardrobes with ease. Stella McCartney’s denim iteration would work perfectly with high waisted mom jeans and pointed boots. Classic western shirts will become your new season answer to a classic breton – perfect for spring weather.

Other designers have embraced louder fabrics and more elaborate embellishment. & Other Stories have delivered quirky-chic shirts this season. They have embellished their yolks with eye and lip motifs – very Dali. Meanwhile, Anna Sui’s florals-plus-fringing shirt delivers a retro punch. We’ll tuck ours into leg-lengthening flares for 1970s chic.

They may be bold, but these statement looks are the perfect way to shake up a pair of classic tailored trousers. No accessories needed. Or for evening dress-up, pair with a luxe leather mini a la Coach. Simply finish with a pair of pointed patent flats. Red will do the job nicely.
