Clerkenwell Design Week returns to the streets of east London, and its eighth year looks bigger, better and bolder than ever. Here’s an overview of some of the highlights

Words Charlotte Johnstone

Last year, Clerkenwell Design Week had over 34,000 visitors. This year, hundreds of top brands and companies will showcase their products again. The three-day fest will display many exhibitions and workshops, some with live talks and installations.

Over 90 companies will host a range of events. Arper will have a bloggers lounge with free Wi-Fi and refreshments. An immersive mirror installation will feature at Jordan Söderberg Mills.

Desso’s workshops will be about ‘Personalisation, Individuality and Uniqueness’. Visitors can even do crafty events like origami and print workshops. These include Drawing at Work by Trevor Flynn and The Floor is Yours open mic jam.

Exhibitions will also show the best of British design from top international companies. These will be across seven spaces in Clerkenwell. Notably, Platform at The House of Detention and Additions at St John’s Square.

Even Fabric nightclub is getting involved. Icon House of Culture at the club will house brands in the basement. Big names like Haberdashery and Channels among them. Clerkenwell Design Week’s first ever light show will take place here, too. Don’t miss the topic-led ‘Conversations at Clerkenwell’. This is a festival hotspot in its own right. Expect music, street food and commissioned installations.

And it’s not just for furniture and interiors. Clerkenwell is home to many creatives. A selection of these will host their own events. Among these, 25 local restaurants and bars with special menus and offers.

It doesn’t stop there. Work will spread to the streets. Passers by will be able to enjoy design projects and spectacles. These projects aim to challenge perceptions and activate the local areas. Most importantly, they push the boundaries of design. Previous participants include Studio Weave, Sebastian Cox and Gruppe.
