When it comes to quality craftsmanship, Japana knives are a cut above the rest

Japana celebrates Japanese craftsmanship and minimalist aesthetics. Since its beginnings in early 2016, the company has gone from selling handmade Japanese knives to a whole range of kitchenware such as knife racks, porcelain dinner plates and cutting boards.

It began when Kamila Hankiewicz was trying to find a quality, affordable Japanese knife as a Christmas gift for her boyfriend. After no luck, she decided to contact a Japanese blacksmith herself and had the knife custom made. They both instantly fell in love with the product. Wanting more people to experience the joy of using it, Kamila set up Japana with her high school friend Anna. They had to overcome many challenges when dealing with the male-dominated, conservative and patriarchal business system of Japanese blacksmiths. However, their love and passion for Japanese craftsmanship prevailed. Today, Japana is based in London with an international customer base. Its mission is to bring high-quality Japanese kitchen knives and accessories to homes worldwide.

Japana Sakai Kyuba Knife SetAs a sustainable company, Japana’s products are made to last with no mass-production or ready-made components, only true craftsmanship. Japana believes less is more – more space, time and peace of mind – and all of their products embody this philosophy. The team personally oversee the end-to-end crafting process to make sure their knives serve you and your family for generations.

Japana only works with artisans who pride themselves on vigilance and respect for their craft, which no machine can replicate. For instance, each blade is forged and hand-polished in Japan by master swordsmen whose techniques have been perfected by their families over centuries.

Japana’s signature range, Sakai Kyuba, is forged with the highest quality V10 46-layer Damascus hammered stainless steel, and is beaten, shaped and polish by hand. By using the same techniques that were used to make katanas (Samurai weapons) thousands of years ago, the knife is sturdier and sharper than anything you will have experienced. Each handle is unique and made with rare European maple burl dyed in green, blue and brown which is dried for two years before assembling.

When you buy a Japana knife, you are getting a beautiful piece of art with an extraordinary history.
