Where to order the best turkeys this Christmas?

By Pendle Harte

If you haven’t ordered your turkey yet, now’s the time. Look out for free range Bronze ones, rather than the mass-produced white ones, and buy as big as you dare. After all, everyone wants to be eating turkey for several days, don’t they?

Where to buy your high quality turkey

Copas

Now producing over 30,000 very special turkeys every year, Copas is a family businesess that started out as a hobby in 1957. Their artisan methods take time and dedication, and their birds are free range, game hung and hand-plucked. Buy online and they’ll deliver – or you can click and collect at Harvey Nichols. From £89 to £170; copasturkeys.co.uk

Fortnum & Mason

Reared on a family-run farm in Worcestershire, these Bronze are fed on a natural diet of only the very finest – Fortnums quality – fodder. £85-£115; fortnumandmason.com

Rhug Estate

Last year’s Great Taste award winner, Rhug Estate is the premium family farm in Wales owned by Lord Newborough; their organic Dee Valley Bronze is the bird of choice for the Connaught Hotel. £69-£147; rhug.co.uk

Macken Brothers

Reared by Bramble Farm and Kelly, the Chiswick butcher’s free range Bronze is full of flavour. 44 Turnham Green Terrace W4; mackenbrothers.co.uk

Lidgates

Available from 2.5kg-10kg. The Holland Park butcher with five generations of carnivore expertise under its belt is offering free range woodland Bronze turkeys, fed on nettles, wild blackberries and freshly grown oats. They are slow maturing birds, for optimum flavour and texture. £45- £161, including free delivery; lidgates.com

The Ginger Pig

Opens its Christmas order book on 19 November, and you can arrange to collect from one of its eight London locations. They offer proper old-fashioned birds: free range, broad-breasted Bronze turkeys reared on natural diets of homegrown wheat and vegetable protein, plus whatever grass and grubs they can peck at out on the estate. £14 per kilo; thegingerpig.co.uk
