Words Helen Brown
A few years ago, the very notion of plastic surgery was taboo. Now it seems more and more people are on the hunt for a tweak here or an enhancement there. Procedures that give no down time, are less invasive and quicker to perform are on the up. We wanted to discover more about the quick-fixes and ‘tweakments’ changing the face of the industry. I’m at The Private Cosmetic Clinic to see Dr. Bruno Amendola about dermal lip fillers. He is an advocate in safety-first when it comes to non-invasive cosmetic treatments on Harley Street. Choosing the right practitioner is paramount in leaving the clinic happy with your treatment. In Britain, you want to be looking out for certification from the British College of Aesthetic Medicine (MBCAM). Dr. Amendola has accreditation from the MBCAM and is on the Specialist Register of Aesthetic Medicine in Italy.
He tells me there are two main types of filler, one designed to add volume – to the lips for example – and one to whisk away lines and wrinkles. They are designed to replace the loss of collagen, recreating the smoother contours of youthful skin without a need for surgery.
The treatment is quick and virtually pain-free. A mild anaesthetic cream is applied to the area before a very fine needle is used to inject the filler. It takes around 20 minutes and Dr. Amendola is meticulous in stepping back every few injections to assess the overall look. I see the results instantly and am very happy with them – my lips look pillowy soft but Dr. Amendola’s work is subtle. I get a few minor bruises on my bottom lip but they fade after a day or two. This is something that not all patients will experience, however. I can see why these treatments are rising so dramatically in popularity and will be happy to return to The Private Cosmetic Clinic for a subsequent treatment.
Dermal filler approx. £300, but prices vary with each treatment
