With many foreign holiday plans cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, The Baltic Travel Company shares ways to experience virtual travel
We may not be able to currently travel far and wide, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy world culture. From online tours of international museums to virtual space explorations, here are five virtual travel experiences to try now.
Museums
Google Arts and Culture have partnered with over 2,500 museums and galleries globally to offer virtual tours of their spaces. Options include Pergamon Museum in Berlin, New York’s Museum of Modern Art and The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. They are all offering virtual video tours of current exhibitions and in depth looks at collection highlights.
Get your nature fix with a virtual visit to spectacular national parks around the world. Many national parks have virtual tours on their websites via Google Arts and Culture; we recommend the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, where you can explore the extraordinary Nahuku Lava Tube, a cave made by flowing lava, in the comfort of your own home.
Escape Earth’s troubles altogether and journey across the surface of Mars through 3D images which were recorded by NASA’s Curiosity Rover. If you want to virtually explore more of space, head to YouTube where 360 degree videos allow you to travel and discover all of the planets.
New York’s famed Metropolitan Opera may be closed to the public, but they have begun streaming sessions starting at 11.30pm every night, with recordings available for 20 hours afterwards. Use as a soundtrack to working from home or video call friends and family for a virtual operatic experience together.
Animal lovers will find Monterey Bay Aquarium’s live webcam viewings immensely therapeutic. Watch pandas, penguins and beluga whales go about their business, and it’s a fantastic way to keep children entertained at home too.
