Words Helen Brown
Slightly nervous about a treatment that sounds so invasive, I am about to undergo my first facial peel. My therapist at Total Body Care, Emma, reassures me that this is the mildest peel, containing 20% glycolic and 10% lactic acid. SkinCeutical products originate from the USA and are used and recommended by dermatologists, plastic surgeons and pharmacies across the world. The products works to chemically exfoliate the skin and can be used to treat acne, hyperpigmentation – areas of darker pigment or brown patches in the skin – dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles, photo-damage, rough texture and ageing skin.
Emma warns that the acid may feel slightly uncomfortable – it doesn’t feel too afflictive, but I do feel a significant tingle, becoming increasingly aware of a tiny patch of broken skin on my cheek. Emma applies the acidic treatment gently but deftly and allows it to sit on my skin for five minutes, during which we discuss aftercare. Removing the peel, she applies serums and a UV defence cream with SPF50 – crucial as the skin remains ultra-sensitive for a number of hours. I am careful not to touch my face, as advised, and remain make-up free until the next evening. And the results? My skin feels rejuvenated and has a definite glow. In truth, I don’t have areas of hyperpigmentation or scarring, but the surface of my skin feels incredibly smooth and maintains a lovely dewy glow for a significant time.
