We’re loving the old school charm of London’s latest culinary trend; the food trolley. Here’s where you can try it for yourself…
Words Helen Brown
This month’s food trend is rolling out across London’s top restaurants faster than you can shout bon appetit. Trundling back into fashion is the food trolley. Yes, it does feel retro but it also delivers exceptional service with old school charm. Here are a few of the best eateries in London where you can check out the food trolley trend for yourself.
MAGPIE
A newcomer to the Soho food scene is Magpie, from established eatery Pidgin. Here, small dim sum plates of Chinese deliciousness are wheeled around on trolleys for your picking. The menu is ideal for sharing, with dishes including mackerel crudo with fennel pollen, or terrine with nukazuke pickles.
SIMPSON’S IN THE STRAND
Following a recent renovation, Simpson’s in the Strand is back open and serving its signature dishes on wheels. The venue’s original trolleys from 1848 will be dishing out British classics. On offer is roast rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding and duck fat roasted potatoes.
LUTYENS GRILL AT THE NED
Situated in a private wood-panelled dining room on the ground floor of The Ned is Lutyens Grill. The clubby, old-school grill vibes are enhanced by the traditional trolley service, where meat is carved and fish are filleted right at your table.
CHILTERN FIREHOUSE
Chiltern Firehouse celebrates contemporary, ingredient-focused cooking, with an underlying American accent. Michelin-starred chef Nuno Mendes creates a changing menu of reimagined classics, with an emphasis on seasonality and healthy eating. But that’s not all. The Chiltern’s famous oyster cart does the rounds each night, allowing guests to start their meals with a selection of fresh-as-you-like oysters.
HIX SOHO
With the relaunch of HIX Soho as a seafood restaurant – guests can now enjoy the theatre of ’today’s catch’ as servers fillet and debone it on a trolley at your table.
