Hyaluronic Acid Serum: your pocket guide to this year’s hottest skincare ingredient, plus six of the best products to buy now

Words Joy Montgomery

Hyaluronic acid serum is the hot new skincare product that beauty bloggers and editors are going mad for. We discover the science behind the miracle molecule and the best serums to invest in now.

What is it?

Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate that occurs naturally in the human body (primarily in our connective tissue and skin) and is responsible for the skin looking young and plump as it holds in moisture (it can attract up to 1,000 times its weight in water). Its production decreases with age, hence the loss of volume and appearance of lines and wrinkles.

What are the benefits?

Because of Hyaluronic acid’s strong water attracting and binding properties it can hydrate skin making it appear plumper, preventing fine lines and wrinkles. It also aids tissue repair and holds together collagen and elastin, helping to smooth the complexion and soothe inflammation. HA serums are a must for anyone above the age of 18, as that’s when the production of HA starts to decrease in our bodies.

It is, however, worth noting that hyaluronic acid doesn’t actually get absorbed into the skin (contrary to what some brands might say) as the molecules are to big, rather it sits on the skin surface where it binds to water to maintain hydration, and cross links with other HA molecules to knit together a temporary barrier.

How to incorporate it into your regime

Hyaluronic acid serum is typically used as a treatment and should be used after cleansing/toning and before your moisturiser. The product should be applied all over your face and neck avoiding the eye area and can be used both in the morning and evening as part of your usual beauty routine.
