Mother of the Bride dresses needn’t be boring: be the envy of every guest with our edit of the best chic and contemporary looks
Words Joy Montgomery
It’s your little girl’s big day and, let’s face it, you’re the second most important person at the wedding fashion-wise. However, shopping for the infamous ‘mother of the bride’ dress can be a daunting task. It’s one of the few occasions when far-reaching friends and family are all gathered in one place and camera lenses are constantly poised. You need to look suitable yet stylish, important yet not attention-grabbing; the politics are extensive and exhausting. To top it all off, it’s a fashion category that has a dubious past – littered with frumpy silhouettes, unflattering fabrics and Thatcher-worthy two-pieces.
Luckily, if you’ve got the big day lined-up this year, you needn’t worry. Fashion brands have finally cottoned on to the fact that the words ‘wedding’, ‘mother’ and ‘chic’ can, in fact, exist in the same sentence. From classic wrap and sheath dresses to trend-led laser-cut lace and ruffles, there are countless high street and high-end looks to love this season.
Dion Lee’s satin midi dress is a gorgeous and sophisticated shade of merlot that will complement any complexion. The long sleeves will cover a multitude of sins, while the wrap-effect neckline is ideal for keeping larger busts in check. Meanwhile, Self Portrait’s lace midi is great for giving a subtle nod to current trends without looking OTT. The cinching waistline and longer length are also perfect for pear-shaped girls. Or, for a 2017 statement, Warehouses’ ruffle dress is the way to go. A great silhouette for athletic figures, this look will ensure you stand out from the crowd (or congregation). Pair with loose, undone waves and block-coloured clutch. See you at the church…
