National Fragrance Day: the Best New & Cult Fragrances

Happy National Fragrance Day! To celebrate we’ve rounded-up our favourite classic scents and new fragrances to discover this year

Chanel no.5 has got to be one of the world’s most iconic fragrances to date. The first fragrance of designer Gabrielle Chanel, this scent was born in 1921 and sold to select clients. With Marilyn Monroe’s endorsement in the 1950s, and a long list of celebrities facing the fragrance since, Chanel no.5 has held onto its cult status. The eau de parfum’s floral bouquet is composed from may rose and jasmine and features bright citrus top notes, while Aldehydes create a unique presence, and the smooth touch of Vanilla.


This is the signature scent from the French fashion house Chloe. Launched in 2008, the feminine fragrance has become one of the best-selling scents on, securing its position as a modern day classic. Drawing on classic rose notes, the scent is both fresh and romantic. Base notes feature cedar and ambergris while heart and top notes include rose petals, magnolia and peony. The fragrance is enclosed in a modern and delicately pleated bottle adorned with a hand-tied ribbon.


Classique is the fragrance from enfant terribles Jean Paul Gaultier. The scent entered the market in 1993 and was followed by a male counterpart two years later. Encased in its signature curvaceous bottle, it embodies the designer’s vision of femininity as both strong and generous. It also references Jean Paul Gaultier’s love of the corset (think Madonna’s conical bra during her 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour). This bold fragrance features base notes of vanilla, amber, heart notes of rose, orchid, orange blossom and ginger, and top notes of star anise and rum.



Inspired by the scent of leather-bound time worn books, Bibliothèque is the latest fragrance release from Byredo. This 100ml collector’s edition fragrance is inspired by the brand’s bestselling candle. It includes with base notes of vanilla and patchouli running alongside top notes of peach and plum. The result is a complex and leathery scent that lingers long after it’s sprayed.


Chanel are going back to their roots for 2017 with a brand new fragrance – the first in 15 years. The scent will celebrate, and named after, the brand’s fearless founder Gabrielle and will be be accompanied by a new handbag range. Described as ‘abstract floral’, this eau de parfum will be available for September 2017 and is sure to be a sellout. Watch this space.


Le Labo is the fine perfumer offering customers beautiful blends housed in no-nonsense, minimalist packaging. The brand is part of a new cohort of niche fragrance brands taking the lead from celebrity scents. Launched in New York in 2006, their small edit of vegan scents can be bought online and, if you visit one of their boutiques, freshly blended in front of you. Their Santal 33 scent is set to be a cult favourite for 2017.
