With temperatures expected to be as high as 24 degrees in the capital over the weekend, these handy tips will keep your house cool and nights restful
Words Athina Bluff and Amy Brandhorst
1. STAY AWAY FROM SYNTHETIC FABRICS
Whether it’s your bed linen or your upholstery, using fabrics with a more natural composition like cotton or linen will keep you cooler. Why? Because they are much more breathable than synthetic fabrics like polyester or acrylic.
2. SWITCH OFF APPLIANCES
Try to keep your home appliances off during the day when it’s hottest. Electrical appliances emit heat and can up the temperature indoors.
3. ENHANCE YOUR FAN
Place an bowl of icy water in front of a fan. Yes, really! As the ice evaporates the fan will disperse a cooling, refreshing breeze around your home.
4. KEEP THE LIDS ON
When cooking, try to keep steam in the pans by cooking with the lids on if possible. Steam can greatly up the temperature in your kitchen.
5. OPT FOR WHITE PAINT
Light colours don’t absorb heat, so painting your home white can keep the heat at bay. This is particularly useful for those dwelling at the top of a building as we all know hot air rises.
