London’s best Sunday roasts
The Smokehouse, Islington
This north London-based pub is a perfect option for those wanting a traditional roast. This BBQ specialist offers the classic line-up of pork ribeye and smoked shoulder, lamb and rare-breed beef. Fish-lovers also have the option to choose pan-roasted salmon.
Dean Street Townhouse, Soho
This swanky Soho-based restaurant does the classic hearty roast to perfection. With a simple selection of Hereford beef or Banham chicken, this is one for those who don’t need the bells and whistles. This is just good, tasty food done well. One for the in-laws.
The Harwood Arms, Fulham
This Michelin starred pub (the only in London) in Fulham offers a fine dining spin on a Sunday roast. The kitchen, specialising in game and wild food, changes the menu to match seasonal ingredients. The result is stunning, fresh-tasting dishes. Highlights include beef rump with bone marrow and Yorkshire grouse.
Bob Bob Ricard, Soho
Housed in a stunning art-deco interior, you may recognise Bob Bob Ricard from Instagram snaps of the ‘press for champagne’ button. Launching a new Sunday roasts menu last year, the Soho-based joint boasts an offering of 16oz USDA Prime Black Angus beef served with horseradish cream and truffle gravy.
Roast, Borough Market
Surrounded by the delectable sights and smells of Borough Market, the suitably named Roast is ideal for a more formal Sunday lunch experience. Watching over the hustle and bustle of the market below, you can choose from the extensive offering of dishes using only produce from British farmers.
Hawksmoor, Various Locations
This meat-lovers heaven has already won awards for its Sunday roasts. With venues scattered over London, this is ideal for those wanting a centrally-located Sunday lunch. Unsurprisingly, the meat is the star of the show. It is cooked first over charcoal and then in the oven, served with show-stopping gravy.
The Jugged Hare, Barbican
Tucked away behind the Barbican Centre, The Jugged Hare specialises in British game, beer and taxidermy (on the walls – not your plate). The well-edited menu offers whole or half chickens, roast legs of lamb, aged rump of beef and even a sucking piglet for two to share.
Blacklock, Various Locations
Specialising in high quality, expertly chargrilled beef, lamb and pork chops, Blacklock’s Sunday roasts have become stuff of legend. Hanging whole joints of meat over the open coals to cook and are served with a generous helping of cauliflower cheese, Yorkshires, roasties and seasonal veg.
Oblix
Oblix is set to take the crown for London’s most outlandish Sunday lunch. Offering a decadent selection of roasts including suckling pig, chicken with truffle, rib of beef and rotisserie duck. Sides include beef-fat roast potatoes, creamed spinach, and gruyere and butter roasted cauliflower, all served with rich gravy and Yorkshire pudding. The Shard based restaurant is the place to spend a lazy Sunday. The incredible views of the London skyline are an added bonus.
